Orthodontic Appliances

At DentalOne, we understand the importance of a healthy, beautiful smile for young people. Fixed braces have long been a cornerstone of orthodontic treatment, offering a time-tested solution to a wide range of dental issues. Here, we explore the reasons behind the success of fixed braces in young individuals and why they are a popular choice at our clinic.

We offer Expanders

  • Expanders come in two different types, fixed and removable.
  • Both serve the same purpose, to expand the upper or lower jaw to increase the width. This ensures enough room for adult teeth, your tongue, improved functionality and a big wide smile.
  • There is a reason this appliance would be recommended to use between certain ages (usually 5-15 years old), but everyone is different. If you are growing quickly and your upper jaw has fused, then this can no longer be used.
  • Expanders are not worn for long, usually between 3-12 months, you may have partial braces placed during that time as well.
  • Expanders are turned each day using a special key, you will need someone to turn it for you.
  • “Seps” or Seperators are small elastics that are placed between the back teeth to create space so the metal bands that hold the expander in can be fitted.

Twin Block

  • The twin block appliance is a functional appliance that is used to push the lower jaw forward in order to align it with the upper jaw.
  • It is called a “twin block” appliance because there are two parts to the appliance – the upper part and the lower part – that work in tandem.
  • When you bite, the blocks fit together in such a way as to position the lower jaw forward. Over time, the lower jaw will permanently stay in this position.
  • You will most likely need to wear your Twin Block for 9-12 months full time. If you aren’t wearing them, they’re not doing their job!
  • Due to growth, there are ideal ages this appliance is worn, ages 9-11 for girls and ages 11-13 for boys.

Space Maintainer

Dental space maintainers (or spacers) are devices used for kids who have lost some baby teeth but their permanent teeth have a while before they will grow in. They hold space for the appropriate adult teeth to grow in. They also prevent the remaining adjacent baby teeth from moving into the open space.

Retainers

  • Retainers are the most important part to your Orthodontic journey! If we do not maintain the position of your teeth, they will move and you may have to have Orthodontic treatment again to correct this.
  • There are different types of retainers, fixed lingual wires, clear plastic retainers or hawley retainers. The one you have depends on what your dentist recommends.
  • Retainers are for life! Over time we will ensure no movement has occured and advise for you to wear them less often, but it is always important to make sure they are fitting, if they aren’t, your teeth have moved.
